Caf confirm amended Afcon dates

The Confederation of African football have announced the new dates of the African Cup of Nations (Afcon) with the tournament now set to take place from June 21 to July 13 2019 after a request from the hosts, Egypt.

The decision was taken after an emergency committee meeting held on Saturday in Cairo, Egypt.

The North African country was confirmed as the new host of the tournament earlier this year after Cameroon were stripped of the hosting rights due to a lack of preparation and security concerns towards the end of 2018.

Caf subsequently informed all affiliated federations about the decision in a letter sent by deputy secretary general Anthony Baffoe.

The letter revealed that draw for the Afcon will take place on April 21 in Cairo.

In its new 24-team format, the tournament will be held from June 21 to July 13 this year.

Caf also confirmed that Cameroon will have to win their remaining game against Comoros to qualify for the Afcon. While Egypt would qualify as hosts, although they had already sealed their spot in the tournament before being named hosts.
