Hugo Broos has shed light on his decision to include uncapped duo Bradley Cross and Olwethu Makhanya in Bafana Bafana’s final 26-man World Cup squad – with Aubrey Modiba’s injury playing a key role in Cross’ selection.
Reported by iDiskiTimes, Cross’ inclusion was partly driven by necessity. Aubrey Modiba picked up an injury during the CAF Champions League final first leg against AS FAR Rabat and his availability remains a concern. With Samukele Kabini the only natural option on the left side of defence, Broos needed cover.
“We still have a little problem with Modiba. Normally there will be no problem, but should there be a problem, we only have Kabini on the left side. That was also a reason why we took Bradley with us.”
Broos added that Cross’ improved form at Kaizer Chiefs this season also contributed to his selection after a difficult couple of years at the club.
Makhanya’s call-up was longer in the making. The Philadelphia Union defender had been on Broos’ radar since March, with the coach and assistant Helman Mkhalele monitoring players every Monday in a process far more rigorous than most realise.
“We don’t call players because the sun shines. Every Monday, Helman and me are in the office looking at who played, did they play well. We follow Makhanya – it’s not because of the last two weeks.”
His physical profile sealed it.
“He’s a good defender, tall, powerful. Very important things for modern football.”
