Broos salutes Bafana’s unsung heroes

Hugo Broos has shared the credit for Bafana Bafana's World Cup qualification with his entire staff and players - singling out assistant Helman Mkhalele for special recognition at a send-off event in Johannesburg.

The Bafana Bafana head coach attended a send-off event at Standard Bank’s Rosebank headquarters on Wednesday ahead of tonight’s official squad announcement at the Union Buildings alongside President Cyril Ramaphosa – and used the platform to redirect the spotlight.

“This is not the work of one man – it’s not the work from me only. I have a wonderful staff and wonderful players. It’s a wonderful family of 40 people who worked hard to achieve that,” Broos said.

He reserved particular praise for assistant coach Helman Mkhalele. “Especially for one man who helped me from the first day I came here – Helman Mkhalele.”
The 74-year-old, heading to his first World Cup as a head coach, was visibly moved by the reception.

“I’m 74 years old, I’ve had a career of 55 years and I can assure you – it has never happened in my career that I’ve felt the same warmth and support.”
