Broos names Bafana squad for World Cup warm-ups

Hugo Broos has named a 32-man preliminary squad for Bafana Bafana's final World Cup preparation camp from 25 to 31 May, with the official squad announcement set for next week.

The 32-man group features a strong mix of overseas-based players and Betway Premiership regulars. Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates provide the bulk of the squad, with representation from clubs across England, the USA, Germany, Norway, Portugal and Cyprus.

Among the notable inclusions are Premier League striker Lyle Foster of Burnley, MLS defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi of Chicago Fire and Philadelphia Union’s Olwethu Makhanya.

Hannover 96 defender Ime Okon, Molde FK’s Samukele Kabini and CD Tondela midfielder Sphephelo Sithole also feature among the overseas contingent, as does AEL Limassol’s Thapelo Maseko.

Domestically, the squad is headlined by Orlando Pirates pair Relebohile Mofokeng and Oswin Appollis, who have been two of the standout performers in the Betway Premiership this season. Mamelodi Sundowns captain Teboho Mokoena, Jayden Adams and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams are also included.

Broos will officially announce his final World Cup squad on 27 May at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, as confirmed by SAFA president Danny Jordaan. The coach can name between 23 and 26 players in the final group. FIFA will officially confirm all final squads on 2 June 2026.

Bafana face Nicaragua in a warm-up friendly on 29 May in Johannesburg – two days after the squad announcement – before departing for Mexico ahead of the tournament opener against the hosts at the Estadio Azteca on 11 June.
