Chiefs’ CAF Confed journey ends in heartbreak

Kaizer Chiefs suffered a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss against Red Arrows in the CAF Confederation Cup on Friday night.

Kaizer Chiefs welcomed Zambian powerhouse Red Arrows to the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday evening for their crunch CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round qualifier.

The Glamour Boys went into the clash with a 1-0 deficit after going down in the first-leg away from home last weekend.

The visitors almost took the lead in as early as the seventh minute however Bruce Bvuma showed exactly why he was trusted to start the match, making a crucial early save.

The Glamour Boys were handed a golden opportunity in the 11th minute however Thulani Mabaso fired straight at the opposition goalkeeper after being played in by Wandile Duba.

Pule Mmodi then had arguably the best chance of the half after he found himself in acres of space in the box, but his weak header failed to threaten the goalkeeper.

It was all square at the half-time break, with the visitors maintaining their advantage from the first-leg.

Fernando Da Cruz’s side managed to take the lead, and effectively level the overall tie in the 65th minute when Bradley Cross met Mfundo Vilakazi’s cross, glancing a header into the bottom corner.

Mduduzi Shabalala squandered a great chance in the 80th minute, firing over the cross bar from close range after being played in by Vilakazi.

That was how it ended in Durban, a win for Kaizer Chiefs on the night, but with the overall tie locked at 1-1 on aggregate, the match went straight to a penalty shootout to decide who would advance to the group stages.

Unfortunately for the Glamour Boys, they were unable to hold their never from the penalty spot, losing 3-2 on penalties.

Bruce Bvuma made solid save first up, however Lebohang Maboe failed to take the early advantage, missing his kick.

The visitors then converted their second penalty, while Shabalala also made no mistake, keeping things level.

Reeve Frosler unfortunately missed Chiefs’ third kick while the hosts took a firm advantage.

Vilakazi managed to slot the fourth penalty home but the visitors held their nerve and sealed the win by converting their fourth penalty.

Red Arrows will now proceed to the CAF Confederation Cup group stages at the expense of Kaizer Chiefs who have been eliminated.
