Lionel Messi has never kicked a ball in the Premier League, yet across Champions League nights with Barcelona and PSG, his record against the same six clubs stacks up remarkably closely.

Manchester United – Messi (4 goals, 0 assists) Ronaldo (3 goals, 0 assists)
Messi edges this one on goals, with four in six games to Ronaldo’s three in five, largely thanks to two Champions League final goals for Barcelona, including his famous header in the 2009 final in Rome and a decisive strike in the 2011 final at Wembley.
Ronaldo’s best moment as an opponent came in the 2013 Champions League last-16 second leg, scoring the goal that sent Real Madrid through on aggregate, and choosing not to celebrate out of respect for his former club.

Manchester City – Messi (7 goals, 2 assists) Ronaldo (5 goals, 1 assist)
This is Messi’s most one-sided club match-up. He’s scored seven goals in eight games to Ronaldo’s five in fifteen, headlined by a hat-trick against Pep Guardiola’s City in a 2016 Champions League group game, his first meeting with his old club since taking the Manchester City job.
Ronaldo’s record against City has never produced a similar standout night, spread thinly across more than a decade of meetings for United, Real Madrid and Juventus. Messi also has the edge on assists here, two to Ronaldo’s one.
Arsenal – Messi (9 goals, 1 assist) Ronaldo (9 goals, 1 assist)
Statistically the closest contest of the lot: both players have scored exactly nine goals against Arsenal, though it took Ronaldo eighteen games to do it against Messi’s six.
Messi’s best night came in a 2010 Champions League quarter-final, scoring all four goals in a 4-1 win to record the first four-goal haul of his career.
Ronaldo’s finest performance came the year before, netting twice and setting up another in a 2009 semi-final second leg that sent Manchester United to the final. Even their assist tallies match exactly, one apiece.

Liverpool – Messi (2 goals, 0 assists) Ronaldo (3 goals, 1 assist)
Messi has the better return here too, with two goals in four games to Ronaldo’s three in fourteen. Both of Messi’s goals against Liverpool came in the same match, the first leg of their dramatic 2019 Champions League semi-final, the second a stunning free-kick that also brought up his 600th career goal.
Barcelona would go on to lose after one of the greatest comebacks in the competition’s history.
Ronaldo’s Liverpool story is one of patience rather than a single big night, having needed six separate attempts across his career before finally scoring at Anfield.
Chelsea – Messi (3 goals, 3 assists) Ronaldo (2 goals, 2 assists)
Messi has three goals in ten games, Ronaldo two in seventeen, with neither producing a standout multi-goal night against the Blues.
Messi’s first goal against Chelsea didn’t arrive until a 2018 last-16 first leg at Stamford Bridge, more than a decade into facing them.
Ronaldo’s most memorable moment came in defeat rather than victory, a header in the 2008 Champions League final in Moscow, followed by a missed penalty in the shootout that United went on to win anyway. Messi narrowly leads the assist column too, three to Ronaldo’s two.
Tottenham – Messi (2 goals, 0 assists) Ronaldo (14 goals, 4 assists)
Ronaldo’s most dominant club match-up by a distance, with fourteen goals in twenty games, including a hat-trick for Manchester United in a 3-2 win in March 2022 that also made him the all-time top scorer in men’s professional football history at the time.
Messi has faced Spurs just twice, but made both count, scoring both goals of his career against them in the same match, a 2018 Champions League group game at Wembley in which he also hit the post twice. Ronaldo’s assist tally against Spurs, four, is his best of any big-six club.

Across all six clubs, Ronaldo leads on total goals, 36 to Messi’s 27, and total assists, nine to Messi’s six, largely a function of playing more than double the number of games, 89 to Messi’s 36.
But Messi’s efficiency stands out, he’s scored a goal every 114 minutes against the big six, compared to Ronaldo’s one every 195, despite never having featured in the Premier League itself.
