Wits target return to Varsity Football’s knockout stages

Thanduxolo Zulu's side open their campaign away to "dark horses" UWC, hoping to go one better after last year's group-stage exit.

Wits begin their 2026 Varsity Football campaign on 7 August aiming to reach the semi-finals, after falling short in last season’s round-robin and navigating a tough qualifying route to secure their spot this time around.

Their opener brings a trip to UWC, a side head coach Thanduxolo Zulu knows well from December’s USSA qualifiers, even if he expects some changes in personnel and approach.

“We know there will be a couple changes in the team setup,” he said. “If their coach hasn’t changed, chances are their approach would be quite similar with a few differences here and there.”

Captain Kgwadi Molepo and goalkeeper Lwando Mvinjana are among those returning from last season, but Zulu was reluctant to single out individuals ahead of the new campaign.

“I believe all the time that the star of the team is the team itself,” he said. “There are a couple of exciting new players who the fans will make their judgements on.”
