Five of the greatest CAF Champions League finals of all time

From Mamelodi Sundowns' historic 2016 triumph to Al Ahly's continental dominance, these are five of the most memorable finals in the history of African club football.

From Mamelodi Sundowns’ historic 2016 triumph to Al Ahly’s continental dominance, these are five of the most memorable CAF Champions League finals in the history of African club football.

The CAF Champions League has produced some extraordinary finals since its inception in 1964. These five stand apart.

Orlando Pirates vs ASEC Mimosas – 1995

A defining moment in South African football history. Pirates drew the first leg 2-2 before Jerry Sikhosana’s solitary goal won the second leg 1-0 in Abidjan.

Pirates became the first club from Southern Africa to win the title – an achievement that carried enormous significance coming just a year after South Africa’s first democratic elections. They were honoured by President Nelson Mandela on their return.

Mamelodi Sundowns vs Zamalek – 2016

The greatest night in Sundowns’ history. Under Pitso Mosimane, Sundowns overwhelmed Zamalek in the first leg at Lucas Moripe Stadium with goals from Anthony Laffor, Tebogo Langerman and an own goal, sealing a commanding 3-0 victory.

Despite losing the return leg 1-0 in Alexandria, Sundowns held firm to win 3-1 on aggregate – becoming only the second South African club to lift the trophy. The campaign was built on Denis Onyango’s commanding performances, Hlompho Kekana’s midfield control and the attacking brilliance of Khama Billiat, Keagan Dolly and Leonardo Castro.

Al Ahly vs Kaizer Chiefs – 2021

A historic final – the first ever to feature two South African clubs on opposite sides. Chiefs reached the final having never previously won the competition, a remarkable achievement in itself. Al Ahly, however, were too strong, winning 3-0 to extend their status as Africa’s most dominant club.

Al Ahly vs Wydad Casablanca – 2023

A dramatic revenge mission for Al Ahly following the controversial 2022 final – a match remembered as much for a VAR failure that caused Wydad to walk off the pitch. Al Ahly claimed their 11th title with a 3-2 aggregate win, Mohamed Abdelmoneim’s tie-breaking goal settling the tie.

Pyramids FC vs Mamelodi Sundowns – 2025

Pyramids beat Sundowns 3-2 on aggregate in a tight, closely contested final. A heartbreaking defeat for Miguel Cardoso’s side, who had come so close to a second continental crown. Sundowns now have the chance to make amends in the 2026 final against FAR Rabat.
