Managers rarely get credited for transfer business the way clubs do, but the money spent and earned while a coach is in charge tells its own story.
New analysis from Winsportsonline has ranked football’s leading managers on both sides of the transfer market: how much their clubs spent on incoming players during their tenures, and how much they recovered through player sales.
Pep Guardiola sits well clear at the top of the spending table, with €2.60 billion invested in new signings across his time at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City, the bulk of it built up during his decade in England.

Jack Grealish’s €117.5 million move from Aston Villa remains the single biggest purchase of his career, with Josko Gvardiol (€90m) and Omar Marmoush also among his largest deals.
José Mourinho is the only other manager to break the €2 billion barrier, sitting on €2.22 billion built up across a far wider spread of clubs, including Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham and Roma.
His single biggest purchase was Paul Pogba’s €105 million move to Manchester United from Juventus.
Ernesto Valverde occupies an unexpected third place at €1.88 billion, just ahead of Carlo Ancelotti on €1.85 billion, with Barcelona’s spending under Valverde including two of the most expensive deals in the entire ranking, Ousmane Dembélé (€148m) and Philippe Coutinho (€135m).

Diego Simeone and Unai Emery round out the top six, both having crossed €1.5 billion in career spending.
Beyond the leading names, the €1 billion mark has become increasingly common, with 21 managers now past that threshold, including Jürgen Klopp, Gian Piero Gasperini, Mauricio Pochettino, Jorge Jesus, Erik ten Hag and David Moyes.
The picture looks very different when the direction of the money is reversed. Diego Simeone actually leads the sales ranking, having generated €1.47 billion for Atlético Madrid through departures such as Antoine Griezmann’s €120 million move to Barcelona and Lucas Hernández’s €80 million switch to Bayern Munich.
Emery follows on €1.35 billion, much of it built during a turbulent recent spell at Aston Villa, while Guardiola completes the top three at €1.26 billion.
Crossing €1 billion in sales has proven far harder than doing so in spending, with only nine managers achieving it compared to 21 on the buying side.

Ten managers, including Guardiola, Mourinho, Simeone, Emery and Ancelotti, appear in both top 15s, though rarely in the same position twice. Valverde, third for spending, doesn’t feature in the sales top 15 at all, while Gian Piero Gasperini sits fourth for sales despite missing the spending top 15 entirely, a reminder that the two rankings measure very different things.
