Kaizer Chiefs sack Giovanni Solinas

Kaizer Chiefs confirmed on Friday afternoon that they have parted ways with manager Giovanni Solinas and assistant coach Patrick Mabedi.

Amakhosi have struggled to find consistency since Solinas’s arrival and after another loss on Tuesday, as the Soweto giants lost 2-1 to Zimamoto FC of Zanzibar in the CAF Confederation Cup, the Chiefs hierarchy has decided to act.

Chiefs may have advanced to the next round of the Caf Confed cup, with a 5-2 aggregate score after the 4-0 win in the first leg in Port Elizabeth last week, but the defeat in mideweek has been indicative of their season as whole as the Glamour Boys have already suffered damaging exits in the MTN 8 and Telkom Knockout semi-finals.

Solinas has also struggled in the league. The Italian coach may have picked up the Absa Premiership Coach of the Month award for September after a run of four wins in a row. However, inconsistencies either side of that run saw the Glamour Boys sit a lowly 11th on the Absa Premiership log with only four wins from 14 matches sitting on 18 points.

The club made the announcement via their twitter account on Friday afternoon where they revealed the contract had mutually agreed to an amicable termination of Solinas’ contract with immediate effect.

The Soweto giants have also decided to let go of assistant coach Patrick Mabedi, who is a long serving member of the club after playing for the club before serving as assistant under both former boss Steve Komphela and Solinas.
