Mamelodi Sundowns head into the 2026/27 season top of CAF’s five-year club ranking, overtaking Al Ahly on the back of winning the 2025/26 CAF Champions League, reaching the final the year before, reports iDiski Times.
With Al Ahly failing to qualify for next season’s Champions League, Sundowns could extend their lead even further with another strong continental campaign.

The rest of South Africa’s representatives paint a more modest picture. Orlando Pirates sit 19th with 20 points after missing out on the Champions League group stages last season, while Stellenbosch FC rank 24th on 14.5 points.
Marumo Gallants and Kaizer Chiefs trail further back in 37th and 38th, with 6 and 5 points respectively.
The ranking is calculated using points collected between 2020/21 and 2025/26, weighted so that the most recent season counts five times as much as the oldest.

Champions League winners earn six points, with runners-up, semi-finalists, quarter-finalists and group stage finishers all scoring on a sliding scale down to one point.
That system worked heavily in Sundowns’ favour, their 2025/26 title alone contributed 30 points to their overall tally of 73, more than double Pirates’ total across the entire period, underlining just how far Sundowns have pulled clear of their domestic rivals on the continental stage.
