Kenyan defensive midfielder Anthony Akumu joined Kaizer Chiefs in a blockbuster move from Zambian giants ZESCO United back in early 2020.
The towering utility midfielder was a central figure of the Amakhosi team that narrowly missed out on the league title after being pipped to it by Mamelodi Sundowns on the final day of the season in September 2020.
In his two-year spell at Naturena, Akumu made a total of 47 appearances for the Glamour Boys before being released by the club in June 2022.
Akumu reveals his lucrative package at Kaizer Chiefs
Four years on from being released by Kaizer Chiefs, Akumu has opened up about his lucrative financial package at Naturena.
He originally joined the Glamour Boys on a three-year deal as a free agent after his contract at ZESCO ran out. Included in his deal was a signing-on bonus of approximately R3 million, which was to be paid out over three years at R1 million per year.
Akumu also stated that his regular monthly salary sat at just under R200 000. “Playing in South Africa still remains my most lucrative offer because they started me on a monthly salary of Ksh1.5 million,” Akumu told MozzartSport.
After parting ways prematurely, the Kenyan international confirmed he had to forfeit R1 million of his R3 million signing-on bonus.
In total though, Akumu is estimated to have earned over R7 million at Kaizer Chiefs during his time at the club, a figure he has struggled to match at his subsequent clubs.
