Wits secured top spot in the Varsity Football round-robin phase with a 2-1 win over DUT, setting up a home semi-final against TUT this Friday, their second meeting with the Tshwane side in as many weeks after a 2-0 win over them earlier this month.

Captain Kgwadi Molepo says there’s genuine excitement around the club at reaching this stage, but insists the group won’t let it distract from the job still ahead.
“We have two phases in the tournament: the round-robin and the knockout phase. Our focus has shifted towards the knockouts. Us being first and securing the home semifinal gives us the motivation and encouragement to show that our hard work is paying off,” he said. “The worst thing we can do now is complacent. We celebrated over the weekend, but now our next goal is winning, and making the finals.”

With TUT having beaten Wits in the knockout stages back in 2018, en route to the title, Molepo isn’t dwelling on that history. “For us, it’s mainly focusing on our story. You can’t neglect the past; however we need to respect what happened before and write our own story,” he said.
