Varsity Football wrap: UJ stay perfect, UFS claim first win of the season

UJ made it four wins from four with a derby victory over Wits, while defending champions UFS picked up their first win of the Varsity Football season against UL.

UJ remain top of the log with four wins from four games and no goals conceded, securing a semi-final spot after beating Wits 2-0 away in the Joburg derby.

Defending champions UFS completed a comeback win over UL at Oscar Mpetha Stadium for their first Varsity Football win of the season.

At Harry Gwala Stadium, UP-Tuks eased to a 3-0 win over DUT, while UWC claimed their first home win of the campaign, edging TUT 3-2 in an entertaining encounter.

UL 1-2 UFS

UFS came from behind to beat UL 2-1 at Oscar Mpetha Stadium. UL took an early lead through Maano Phaswana after just nine minutes, but UFS turned the game around after the break, levelling through Ben Kraai before Jerome Jansen struck the winner.

UL pushed for a late equaliser, but UFS held firm to claim their first win of the season, with Jansen named Player of the Match.

DUT 0-3 UP-Tuks

UP-Tuks eased to a 3-0 win in Durban, opening the scoring through Ntokozo Madela after a driving run from Risen Albert.

Matome Rangata doubled the lead with a stunning lob from distance in the second half, before substitute Philasande Khuzwayo added a third late on to complete a comfortable win for the visitors. Lebogang Mswane was named Player of the Match.

TUT 2-3 UWC

UWC came from behind twice to beat TUT 3-2 in a five-goal thriller. Kearabilwe Mphahlele fired TUT ahead after a driving Akani Rathokoa run, before Imaan January headed UWC level and Mesuli Manzi’s set-piece delivery helped the visitors take the lead before half-time.

TUT levelled again through Likhona James after a goalkeeping error, but substitute Liphulo Zini’s curling effort in the 80th minute proved decisive, sealing UWC’s first home win of the campaign. January was named Player of the Match.

Wits 0-2 UJ

UJ made it four wins from four with victory in the Johannesburg derby. Sandile Nkosi broke the deadlock on the counter-attack in the 27th minute, and Tokoloho Vilakazi added a second late on to secure the win, with Wits unable to find a way past a resolute UJ defence. Nkosi was named Player of the Match.
