UL have opened their Varsity Football campaign without a point or a goal, losing 2-0 to DUT before falling 3-0 to Wits, but head coach Lesetja Dukes Laka believes the results don’t reflect how his side has actually played.
“The team’s overall performance has been positive irrespective of the results,” Laka said. “We have managed to create clearer goalscoring opportunities than both opponents.”

He said the focus this week has been on finishing, defensive organisation and decision-making, with the aim of winning the next match and keeping a clean sheet.
Laka pointed to his squad’s pedigree as reason for confidence, noting they beat several of this season’s rivals to qualify through the USSA Championships. “This is the group that beat these teams at USSAs to qualify for Varsity Football 2026,” he said.
UL travel to face UJ at UJ Soweto Stadium, kick-off 18:30 on Friday.
