UJ,Tuks set up final showdown in Varsity Football Women

UJ ended UWC's title defence before it reached a final, while Tuks needed penalties to see off TUT in a tense Pretoria derby.

UJ 1-0 UWC

Reigning champions UWC saw their bid for a fourth straight title come to an end at Wits Stadium, beaten 1-0 by a UJ side that dominated large stretches of the semi-final without finding a way through until late on.

Goalkeeper Thandeka Ngcobo kept UWC in it with a string of saves as the pressure built, before Lindelwa Mabuza settled it in the 67th minute, exchanging passes with Sbongakonke Mzobe before lifting a composed chip beyond her. Sthembile Sandleni took the Player of the Match award.

UP-Tuks 1(6)-1(5) TUT

Neighbours UP-Tuks and TUT needed a penalty shootout to separate them in a Pretoria derby that swung both ways inside the opening 20 minutes. Ibanathi Msindo’s deflected free-kick gave Tuks an early lead before TUT captain Sibongile Ntoane restored parity with a clean strike of her own.

Chances dried up from there, and the shootout ran to sudden death before Tuks keeper Akani Maluleke made the save that sent her side through. Msindo picked up Player of the Match honours.

Wits 1-0 CPUT

Nokubonga Msimango’s first-half goal was enough to hand Wits bragging rights over CPUT in their Group A decider, even as the visitors pushed hard for an equaliser after the break.

CPUT’s Kiyhana Daniels repeatedly denied Wits a second and was named Player of the Match on the losing side, while Zozibini Jim’s late chance to level things up went agonisingly wide.

WSU 2-1 UL

WSU came from behind to beat fellow newcomers UL 2-1 in a tight, back-and-forth contest. Fiona Namanyana put UL ahead from a free-kick, but Mandisa Gumede levelled early in the second half before Lilitha Mjungula’s long-range effort proved decisive.

UL almost snatched a late leveller of their own, but WSU held firm to close out the win. Namanyana was named Player of the Match despite the defeat.
