UWC are ready to challenge for the Varsity Football title again after failing to qualify last season, which cost them the chance to defend the trophy they won in 2024.
Head coach Lwando Mdleleni says the rebuild began at the start of 2025, retaining a core of experienced players while bringing in younger talent to freshen up the squad.
“We had to rebuild the team because last year we were not able to defend our trophy,” he said. “We managed to retain some of the players and then brought in young blood and fresher faces to add energy to the team.”
The squad has completed two training camps and played warm-up fixtures against Stellenbosch FC and Hope FC, though injuries have complicated preparations, with some players still regaining confidence after surgery.
“It has been a gruelling four or five months of preparation for the boys,” Mdleleni said. “You never really know how well you’ve prepared until you play your first game.”
He also urged Cape Town’s football community to rally behind the squad as UWC look to reclaim the trophy.
