Danny Welbeck is set to join Chelsea from Brighton, with the two clubs reaching an agreement and personal terms in place until 2028. Brighton approved the move after Welbeck made a formal request to leave, with a medical still to follow.
The transfer is a genuinely surprising one given Welbeck’s age. He turns 36 in November, yet is coming off the best season of his career, scoring 13 goals in the 2025-26 Premier League campaign, his highest tally since netting nine for Manchester United back in 2013-14.
It marks the second consecutive season he has hit double figures, having also scored 10 the year before.

Welbeck’s journey has taken him through some of English football’s biggest clubs. He came through Manchester United’s academy, winning the Premier League title in 2012-13, before moving to Arsenal in 2014 for £20 million, where he won two FA Cups.
A spell at Watford followed in 2019, before he joined Brighton on a free transfer in 2020, a move that has since produced a remarkable late career renaissance. Across his Premier League career, Welbeck has made 395 appearances, scoring 90 goals.

For Chelsea, the move represents a striking shift in recruitment philosophy under new head coach Xabi Alonso, whose current strikers average just 23 years of age.
Welbeck alone has made more Premier League appearances and scored more goals than Chelsea’s four senior forwards combined, offering a rare blend of experience and continued top level output at an age when few players are still operating at his level.
The signing of former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is expected to follow shortly, with another experienced option being added to the youthful dressing room.
