Since 1966, when England won their only World Cup semi-final, they have now lost each of their last three at this stage, in 1990, 2018 and 2026, a run that has come to define the ceiling of the current era.
The manner of Wednesday’s defeat added to the sense of deja vu. England are now one of only two nations this century to score first in a World Cup semi-final and still fail to reach the final, joining themselves, having done exactly the same against Croatia in 2018.
No other side has managed that unwanted feat twice.

There is a wider trend at play too. England have now been eliminated in every single knockout meeting with a top 10 ranked nation at a World Cup since 1998, a run stretching to seven from seven.

Argentina, ranked inside the world’s elite throughout this tournament, simply became the latest side to expose that pattern once England’s lead turned into a lead they had to defend rather than extend.
For Thomas Tuchel, the challenge now is finding a way to break a cycle that has outlasted several generations of England managers and players, one where reaching the final four has become routine, but getting past it has not.
