Argentina recovered from two goals down to beat Egypt in an Atlanta thriller, with Egypt leading through Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico deep into the second half.
Cristian Romero headed in from a Messi cross to pull one back, before Messi volleyed home his eighth goal of the tournament to level. Enzo Fernandez then struck a stoppage time winner to complete the comeback.
Switzerland 0-0 Colombia (Switzerland win 4-3 on penalties)
Switzerland reached their first World Cup quarter-final since hosting the tournament in 1954, beating Colombia on penalties after a goalless draw in Vancouver.
Gregor Kobel saved Cucho Hernandez’s spot kick before Ruben Vargas converted the decisive penalty. Colombia had chances of their own in extra time, hitting the bar through Jhon Lucumi, but could not find a breakthrough.
Captain Granit Xhaka praised the character of his squad afterwards, while Colombia’s Luis Suarez said he hoped the run marked a turning point for his country.
Argentina and Switzerland will meet in Kansas City on Saturday, completing a quarter-final lineup that also includes France against Morocco on Thursday.
