Mbekezeli Mbokazi has been ranked the top-performing centre-back at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the 20-year-old recording an overall grade of 86.0 from analytics firm Gradient Sports, the highest of any defender in his position across the entire tournament.
The Chicago Fire defender’s standout numbers include a positioning grade of 86.6, ranking ninth among all centre-backs, and a clearance rating of 82.7, good for seventh in the same group.
His passing also stood out at 76.7, ranking 21st overall but still nearly ten points above the positional average. Mbokazi’s pressed passing (71.3) and duel success (74.3) both came in comfortably above the benchmark for his position, while his one-on-one defending grade of 76.1 ranked fourth among all 158 centre-backs assessed.

The numbers back up what South African fans have seen with their own eyes throughout Bafana Bafana’s historic World Cup run. Mbokazi has been a defensive rock across all three group matches, helping South Africa reach the Round of 32 for the first time in their history, despite finishing their opening match with reduced numbers due to red cards.
