Switzerland are one of European football’s most reliable and underrated nations. Consistent qualifiers, tactically disciplined and capable of producing results against the very best sides on their day, the Swiss have built a reputation as one of the most awkward opponents in international football.
Their squad combines seasoned European club experience with technical quality throughout – and they arrive at the 2026 World Cup as the clear favourites to top Group B under coach Murat Yakin, who has been in charge since 2021.
How they got there
Switzerland topped UEFA qualifying Group B with an unbeaten campaign – four wins and two draws from six matches, scoring 14 goals and conceding just two.
They beat Kosovo 4-0, Slovenia 3-0 and won 2-0 away in Sweden to secure automatic qualification with a game to spare. It was a dominant campaign that reflected the strength and consistency of this Swiss generation. This is their sixth consecutive World Cup appearance and their 13th overall.
Best ever World Cup finish
Switzerland’s finest World Cup performances came in their earliest appearances – reaching the quarter-finals in 1934, 1938 and as hosts in 1954. In the modern era they have been consistent group stage qualifiers, reaching the Round of 16 in 2014, 2018 and 2022 before exiting each time.
At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar they were beaten by Portugal in the last 16. The quarter-final remains their ceiling – but this generation has the quality to break through it.
Iconic moments
Switzerland’s most celebrated recent moment came at Euro 2020 when they eliminated world champions France in the round of 16. Trailing 3-1 with minutes remaining, they scored twice to level at 3-3 before winning 5-4 on penalties after Kylian Mbappe missed the decisive spot-kick. Goalkeeper Yann Sommer was the hero.
They followed that with another giant-killing at Euro 2024, beating defending champions Italy 2-0 in the round of 16 in Berlin – Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas scoring in a dominant display.
Players to watch
Granit Xhaka (Sunderland) – Switzerland’s captain and record appearance-maker with 144 caps. The 33-year-old Sunderland midfielder is the heartbeat of the Swiss side – controlling tempo, breaking up play and driving forward with purpose. He will be making his fourth World Cup appearance and brings an experience and leadership that is irreplaceable.
Breel Embolo (Stade Rennais) – Switzerland’s most physical and direct attacking option. Embolo scored four goals in qualifying and provides the hold-up play, pressing intensity and box threat that gives the Swiss a different dimension in attack. His power and directness make him one of the most difficult strikers to defend against in European football.
