The 40 year old goalkeeper, who has spent much of his career outside the spotlight, helped Cape Verde secure a historic 0-0 draw and their first ever World Cup point.
Before the tournament, Vozinha was largely unknown outside football circles. Born in Mindelo, Cape Verde, he only turned professional at the age of 25 and has spent nearly two decades playing for clubs across Portugal, Angola, Moldova, Cyprus and Slovakia. Despite a lengthy career, he has won just one major trophy, the Cypriot Cup with AEL Limassol in 2019.

On Monday, however, he delivered the performance of his life. Facing a Spanish side packed with talent, Vozinha made seven saves as Cape Verde withstood 27 shots to earn a famous result. His display earned him the Man of the Match award and left him emotional at the final whistle.
Cape Verde coach Bubista described his tears as a reflection of the resilience and sacrifices that had brought him to football’s biggest stage. Vozinha later revealed that thoughts of his late grandparents and the absence of his mother, who could not attend due to visa complications, contributed to his emotions.

The goalkeeper’s heroics quickly captured global attention. After Brazilian broadcaster CazéTV encouraged fans to follow him online, his Instagram following exploded from around 50,000 to millions within hours.

Having already kept seven clean sheets during World Cup qualifying, Vozinha’s performance against Spain reinforced his importance to Cape Verde. His inspirational journey now continues as the tournament newcomers prepare for their next challenge against Uruguay.
