Ecuador are quietly one of the most intriguing sides at the 2026 World Cup. Under Argentine coach Sebastian Beccacece – appointed in August 2024 – they have become a disciplined, organised and technically gifted outfit.
Known as La Tri, Ecuador carry the hopes of a nation that believes this generation is different to all those that came before.
How they got there
Ecuador finished second in CONMEBOL qualifying behind defending champions Argentina with 29 points – recording eight wins, eight draws and just two defeats across 18 matches.
Their defensive record was the best on the continent – conceding just five goals and keeping 13 clean sheets. The only losses came away against Argentina and Brazil – a reflection of the quality of their opponents rather than any weakness in Beccacece’s system.
Best ever World Cup finish
Ecuador’s finest World Cup moment came at the 2006 tournament in Germany – their second World Cup appearance. They emerged from their group by beating Poland and Costa Rica before reaching the Round of 16 where a David Beckham free kick gave England a 1-0 victory.
It remains the only time Ecuador have reached the knockout stages. This fifth appearance represents their best opportunity to go further.
Iconic moments
Ecuador’s most celebrated World Cup moment remains their Round of 16 appearance at the 2006 tournament in Germany. Despite qualifying from a group containing Germany, Poland and Costa Rica, a single David Beckham free kick in the 60th minute ended their campaign against England.
Away from the World Cup, the emergence of Moises Caicedo as one of Europe’s finest midfielders represents the most significant moment in the modern era of Ecuadorian football.
Players to watch
Moises Caicedo (Chelsea) – Ecuador’s engine and their most important player. The 24-year-old has established himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League since joining Chelsea for £115 million – providing the defensive cover and ball progression that allows La Tri to transition quickly from back to front.
Piero Hincapie (Arsenal) – The 24-year-old left back is the cornerstone of Ecuador’s defensive identity. Having won the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen before joining Arsenal, Hincapie won the Premier League title in his debut season at the Emirates – ending a 22-year wait for the club. His composure, reading of the game and ability to play out from the back make him one of Ecuador’s most complete players heading into the tournament.
