Champions League wrap: Viking shock Bayern, Atleti embarrass United

Michael Olise’s red card cost Bayern Munich victory at Viking, Manchester United lost at Atlético and Club Brugge stunned Inter in a dramatic Champions League night.

Tuesday’s Champions League night brought wins for Barcelona and Arsenal, a damaging defeat for Manchester United and shocks for Inter and Bayern.

Galatasaray 1-4 Barcelona

Aleksei Batrakov’s deflected drive put Galatasaray ahead just before the half-hour, but Dani Olmo’s pass sent João Cancelo through to level before the break. Lamine Yamal then took over.

His cross brought Fermín López’s header on 50 minutes and, three minutes later, he beat Eren Elmali three times before setting up Anthony Gordon. Karim Adeyemi added a fourth after Yamal’s pass to Gabriel Jesus. “We’re at a very high level,” Fermín said.

Barcelona top the table with two wins, while Galatasaray remain pointless.

Inter 3-4 Club Brugge

Nicolò Tresoldi scored a hat-trick for Brugge at the San Siro. He converted a penalty before the half-hour, Lautaro Martínez levelled just before the break, and Tresoldi put Brugge back in front after the hour by punishing a goalkeeping blunder.

He added a third 15 minutes from time, but Martínez pulled one back on 81 minutes and Romeo Vermant restored Brugge’s two-goal lead on 87. Ange-Yoan Bonny’s stoppage-time goal came too late. “I dreamt many times of these nights and this was the best dream,” Tresoldi said.

Inter have no points after losing at Real Madrid, while Brugge host Lens next.

Viking 3-3 Bayern Munich

Gianni Stensness headed Viking ahead after 72 seconds, and Peter Christiansen’s counter-attacking finish made it 2-0 on 38. Harry Kane pulled one back from the penalty spot, levelled with a header from Joshua Kimmich’s cross, and Luis Díaz put Bayern 3-2 ahead.

Then Michael Olise was sent off for two yellow cards in quick succession, the second for throwing the ball at Viking captain Zlatko Tripic’s face, and Herman Haugen headed in an equaliser on 90 minutes.

Vincent Kompany called the red “super dumb”. Kane scored for a ninth straight Champions League game, and Olise misses next week’s match against Arsenal.

Arsenal 3-0 Lille

Arsenal needed a second half and a strong bench to beat Lille at the Emirates. The first half was goalless, with Ayase Ueda’s goal ruled out for offside and Bruno Guimarães missing from close range.

Then, just after the hour, Jurrien Timber chipped the opener over Berke Özer, Eberechi Eze’s deflected shot doubled the lead and Bukayo Saka finished a slick move from Kai Havertz’s cut-back, three goals in seven minutes.

Saka, Havertz and Martin Ødegaard all started on the bench. “The ones that finish the game are extraordinary,” Mikel Arteta said. Arsenal share the lead with Barcelona and Sporting.

Atlético Madrid 2-0 Manchester United

Pablo Barrios scored inside the first minute in Madrid and United never recovered. Atlético had a goal ruled out for handball before the break, and after the restart Bruno Fernandes hit the crossbar.

But Leny Yoro was sent off after a VAR review for bringing down Jonathan David, and Ademola Lookman tapped in the rebound late on. Michael Carrick’s side are winless in five games in all competitions, and Lisandro Martínez called the performance “really poor”.

Barrios dedicated Atlético’s first points of the campaign to captain Koke, absent after the death of his mother.
