Champions League wrap: Haaland powers City past Porto

Real Madrid edged Inter while Aston Villa, Dortmund, Real Betis and AEK Athens also opened their campaigns with victories.

Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City began their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 victory over Porto at the Estádio do Dragão.

The Norwegian broke the deadlock shortly after half-time, heading an Enzo Fernandez delivery in off the post. He completed his brace in stoppage time from Rayan Aït-Nouri’s cut-back.

Kylian Mbappe and Federico Valverde struck during the first half of Real Madrid’s 2-1 win against Inter at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Carlos Augusto reduced the deficit after the interval, but José Mourinho’s side held firm to claim three points. Mbappe’s goal took him level with Madrid great Raúl on 71 in the competition.

Aston Villa survived a second-half fightback to beat Club Brugge 3-2 in Belgium. John McGinn, Emi Buendía and Nicolas Jackson gave the visitors a 3-1 advantage before Nicolò Tresoldi’s penalty brought Brugge back into contention.

Serhou Guirassy netted twice as Borussia Dortmund secured a dramatic 3-2 triumph over Villarreal. Renato Veiga’s own goal put Dortmund ahead before Santiago Mouriño levelled, but Guirassy’s late double decided the contest despite his stoppage-time own goal.

Real Betis came from behind twice to defeat Lille 3-2 in France. Marc Bartra scored both equalisers before Troy Parrott grabbed the winner, with Lille’s Ethan Mbappe later sent off.

Razvan Marin’s first-half free-kick earned AEK Athens a 1-0 home win over LASK in the evening’s other fixture.
