Wright doubts Arsenal in title run-in

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has raised concerns over the team’s mentality ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Manchester City, admitting he would “rather be in City’s dressing room” at this stage of the title race.

Mikel Arteta’s side sit six points clear at the top, but City have a game in hand and could take control of the race with a win at the Etihad. Arsenal’s recent form has added to the pressure, with just one win in their last five matches in all competitions.

That run includes defeat to City in the League Cup final, FA Cup elimination against Southampton, a loss to Bournemouth in the league, and a goalless draw with Sporting that saw them progress in Europe but again struggle in attack.

Speaking on The Overlap, Wright said: “Arsenal have started the season brilliantly and the time that counts is after Christmas and now. Arsenal are once again faltering at a time where Man City are finding their form.”

He added: “We’re not playing good football. I’d rather be in Man City’s dressing room. If I’m honest, it’s a pain that’s killing me.”

Wright also pointed to a recurring issue with how the team handles pressure.

“At every juncture when it comes to finishing it off this team hasn’t learned how to deal with the pressure,” he said. “It’s April and we’ve hardly won a football match.”

The former striker suggested the players are too dependent on Arteta’s control during matches.

“This manager is on the players for every second of the game,” Wright said. “I don’t believe the players in this squad have the confidence to go against the manager and make their own decisions.”

Despite his concerns, Wright acknowledged the strength of the squad.

“This is the best squad we have assembled to do it,” he said. “But right now it’s failing.”

Sunday’s clash at the Etihad now represents a defining moment, with Arsenal needing a response to keep control of the title race.
