Sunderland have agreed a deal worth up to €20 million (£17m) to sign Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka, according to The Athletic.
The newly-promoted Premier League side will pay €15m up front, with a further €5m in performance-related add-ons. Xhaka is expected to undergo a medical in the next 24 to 48 hours.
Xhaka, who joined Leverkusen from Arsenal in 2023, played a key role in their Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal-winning campaign last season, making 49 appearances in all competitions. Despite interest from Saudi Arabia and the option to stay in Germany, Xhaka made it clear he only wanted to join Sunderland.
The 32-year-old Switzerland captain made 297 appearances for Arsenal during his seven-year spell in North London, winning two FA Cups. He has 99 appearances for Leverkusen and featured 10 times in last season’s Champions League.
Sunderland have already signed six players this window, including midfielders Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki. Jobe Bellingham was sold to Borussia Dortmund for £30m, and Tommy Watson joined Brighton for £10m.

The signing of Xhaka marks a shift in Sunderland’s transfer strategy. Since Kyril Louis-Dreyfus’ takeover in 2021, the club has focused heavily on youth, with most of their major signings under the age of 25. Xhaka becomes the first player the club have invested in at this level without a clear resale plan.
Sunderland believe the veteran’s experience and leadership can provide stability as they return to the top flight. His arrival also deepens their midfield options, alongside Diarra, Sadiki and Enzo Le Fée.
While competition for places will increase, Xhaka is expected to be a key figure under manager Régis Le Bris. His presence could also help Sunderland attract further experienced players before the window closes.
