Romero on the market as Spurs plan rebuild

Tottenham Hotspur are preparing for a major squad changes that could see captain Cristian Romero leave the club at the end of the season, according to a report by The Telegraph.

The North London side are considering significant changes to their playing squad as they attempt to address an underwhelming campaign and reshape the team over the coming transfer windows. Romero is among several high-profile players who could be sold to generate funds for new signings.

The Argentina international remains available for Tottenham’s Champions League last-16 clash with Atletico Madrid after serving a four-match suspension in the Premier League. Atletico are long-term admirers of the 27-year-old defender, meaning the fixture could provide an opportunity for the Spanish side to assess him closely.

Despite Romero’s importance on the pitch, Tottenham increasingly believe that a summer departure may benefit both the club and the player. The centre-back signed a new contract last year and was handed the captaincy, but his season has been disrupted by suspensions and criticism of the club’s leadership on social media.

Sources indicate Romero had hoped to leave Spurs after last season’s Europa League triumph, but the club rejected the possibility of a reduced transfer fee and placed a valuation of more than £60 million on the defender.

Romero is not the only player who could be moved on as Tottenham attempt to reshape the squad. Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and full-back Pedro Porro are also among those reportedly attracting interest and could be sold if suitable offers arrive.

Tottenham chief executive Vinai Venkatesham recently warned that the club must balance spending with player sales to comply with financial regulations.

Planning the rebuild is complicated by Tottenham’s precarious position in the Premier League table and uncertainty surrounding the club’s long-term coaching structure. However, the club believe significant changes are necessary to improve leadership and experience within the squad.

Players Tottenham would ideally keep include Micky van de Ven, Dominic Solanke, Conor Gallagher, Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons, Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, James Maddison, and Dejan Kulusevski.

Recruitment is expected to focus on experienced players in their mid-20s or older who can strengthen the team both on and off the pitch. Tottenham are also continuing their search for a new permanent head coach and additional sporting directors as part of a wider restructuring of the club’s football operations.

The coming transfer windows could therefore mark a significant turning point as Spurs attempt to rebuild their squad and restore competitiveness.
