Fowler had made his debut less than two weeks earlier, scoring in a 3-1 first-leg win at Craven Cottage under manager Graeme Souness. Back at Anfield, he finished the job on his own, sealing an 8-1 aggregate win in front of only 12,541 supporters, the lowest home crowd of Liverpool’s season.

He became the fifth Liverpool player to score five in a single game, after John Miller, Andy McGuigan, John Evans and Ian Rush.
It was only the start. Later that month he scored his first league hat-trick, against Southampton on 30 October in just his fifth league game, and finished 1993/94 with 18 goals in all competitions, one fewer than Ian Rush.
The following season he scored what was then the fastest Premier League hat-trick, in four minutes and 33 seconds against Arsenal, a record that stood until Sadio Mané beat it in 2015.
Christened “God” by the Kop, Fowler went on to score 183 goals in 369 appearances over two spells, seventh on the club’s all-time scoring list.
