On this day: Beckham’s halfway line wonder strike

On 17 August 1996, David Beckham scored one of the most iconic goals in Premier League history, lobbing Wimbledon goalkeeper Neil Sullivan from just inside his own half on the opening day of the season.

Manchester United were already 2-0 up at Selhurst Park when Beckham, spotting Sullivan off his line, struck a first-time effort from around 57 yards that dropped perfectly under the crossbar.

The goal capped a 3-0 win for United and instantly became one of the defining images of the Premier League’s growing highlight-reel culture, replayed endlessly on Match of the Day and credited with helping turn Beckham into a household name almost overnight.

The 21-year-old would go on to establish himself as a first-team regular that season, and has since described it as his favourite goal of his career, ahead of far higher-stakes strikes for both United and England.

It remains one of the most replayed clips in English football history nearly three decades on.
