Newcastle United have had two big-money bids rejected as they attempt to bolster their squad ahead of a return to the Champions League, according to The Times.
The Magpies tabled a £25-million offer for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford and £50 million for Brighton forward João Pedro, but both were turned down. Newcastle remain keen on Trafford, who kept 29 clean sheets in the Championship last season and is seen as England’s next long-term No 1. Burnley reportedly value the 22-year-old at over £30 million.
They also had a £45-million bid for Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga rejected, as they look to add attacking depth. Pedro, who has three Brazil caps and can play centrally or out wide, remains of interest after a previous failed move when he was at Watford.
Newcastle have not signed a major first-team player in three windows due to Profit and Sustainability Rule (PSR) constraints. Last June, they sold Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh for a combined £70 million to avoid a potential points deduction.
With CEO Darren Eales and sporting director Paul Mitchell departing this month, head coach Eddie Howe and assistant recruitment chief Andy Howe are now leading the club’s transfer plans.
