Newcastle in talks to sign Aaron Ramsdale

Newcastle United are exploring a deal to sign Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton as they look to build on an underwhelming transfer window, according to The Athletic.

The club has submitted an offer for an initial loan with an option to buy. While discussions are ongoing, no agreement has been reached. Southampton are open to several outcomes, including a straight sale, a loan with a substantial fee and future purchase clause, or keeping Ramsdale for the upcoming season.

Newcastle have been searching for a new goalkeeper this summer and had prioritised James Trafford. However, Trafford is now expected to re-join Manchester City. As The Athletic reported, City matched Newcastle’s £27million bid and agreed personal terms with the 21-year-old, who previously left the club in June 2023.

With Trafford no longer available, Newcastle have turned to Ramsdale, who joined Southampton from Arsenal in a £25m deal last summer. The 27-year-old made 32 appearances as Southampton were relegated from the Premier League. He has four years remaining on his current contract.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe previously worked with Southampton’s No 1 during their time together at Bournemouth between 2017 and 2020.

Ramsdale’s career has included highs and lows. He was Arsenal’s No.1 in the 2022-23 campaign, playing every minute of their Premier League season as they finished second. But he lost his place to David Raya the following year and was allowed to leave for regular football.

Ramsdale has also suffered three relegations in his career, with Bournemouth, Sheffield United and Southampton. Despite that, he remains an experienced England international, and Newcastle believe he could offer depth and competition for Nick Pope.

Newcastle currently have Pope as first-choice, along with Martin Dubravka, Odysseas Vlachodimos, John Ruddy and Mark Gillespie in their goalkeeping ranks. Strengthening that department remains a key priority as the club looks to retool ahead of the new season.
