Liverpool’s Isak bid rejected by Newcastle

Newcastle United have rejected a formal offer more more than £110-million from Liverpool for star striker Alexander Isak, according to a report by The Athletic.

The Sweden international, who scored 27 goals across all competitions last season, has informed Newcastle of his desire to leave the club. Despite being under contract until 2028, Isak has made it clear to senior officials and team-mates that he sees his future elsewhere.

Liverpool initially made an informal approach, before tabling an official bid in recent days. Newcastle turned it down and remain reluctant to sell, though they have started exploring replacement options in case the situation changes.

Isak, 25, has been training at Real Sociedad’s Zubieta facility—his former club—while Newcastle are on pre-season tour in South Korea. The club has cited a minor thigh injury for his absence, but sources close to the player told The Athletic that the decision to train separately was his preference, amid uncertainty over his future.

Newcastle had tried to extend Isak’s contract and insert a release clause, but the forward and his representatives have held firm. The Magpies are now tracking RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko—although Manchester United have moved into pole position—and have also shown interest in Brentford’s Yoane Wissa.

Liverpool, fresh off their Premier League title win, went on to complete the signing of Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for £69 million. Newcastle had also been monitoring Ekitike.

Isak joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022 for a club-record £60 million and has since developed into one of Europe’s top forwards. His goal in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool helped end the Magpies’ 70-year wait for a domestic trophy.

While Newcastle remain firm that Isak is not for sale, Liverpool’s pursuit signals serious intent to strengthen their front line before the new season.
