Konate drops bombshell on Liverpool future

Ibrahima Konate has cast fresh light on his Liverpool future, admitting he is “close” to a new contract but stopping short of confirming his long-term stay at Anfield.

The 26-year-old centre-back, whose current deal expires at the end of the season, has been at the centre of speculation amid interest from Europe’s top clubs. However, speaking after Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Everton, Konate suggested progress has finally been made.

“For a long time we have spoken with the club and we are close to an agreement,” he said.

“I think everyone wished for that for as long as possible but we are in a good way. For sure, there is a big chance I’m here next season. This is what I always wanted.”

Despite the positive update, Konate stopped short of confirming a deal, leaving his immediate future unresolved as negotiations continue.

“This is negotiation,” he added. “With Virgil and Mo last season, it was exactly the same. I think they signed their contracts in April.”

Konate’s comments suggest confidence behind the scenes, but also highlight how close Liverpool came to losing one of their key defenders on a free transfer.

The French international has made 178 appearances since joining from RB Leipzig in 2021 and remains a first-choice partner alongside Virgil van Dijk.

“I have a special relationship not only with the fans, but with every single person who works at the club,” he said. “This club means so much to me.”

With Liverpool heading into a key summer rebuild, Konate’s situation remains one to watch, even as talks move closer to a resolution.
