Ex-United defender sues club for medical negligence

Former Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe is suing the Red Devils for medical negligence during his time at Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old, who left United in 2023, submitted the case to the High Court last week. The exact nature of the claim remains unclear, and Manchester United have declined to comment.

Tuanzebe joined United at the age of eight and captained the club at every level. He made 37 senior appearances between 2017 and 2023 but struggled with injuries throughout his time at Old Trafford. After a promising loan spell at Aston Villa, he featured in key matches under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, only for hip and hamstring problems to derail his 2019–20 campaign.

Since leaving United, Tuanzebe rebuilt his career. He was a key figure in Ipswich Town’s promotion to the Premier League, making 45 appearances in 2023–24. This summer, he rejected a new deal from Ipswich to join newly promoted Burnley, becoming the club’s third signing of the window.

Reflecting on the move, Tuanzebe said the decision was straightforward after talks with manager Scott Parker and added that returning to the Manchester area feels like a natural step in his career. The legal case is ongoing.
