Manchester City are exploring the option of re-signing James Trafford from Burnley as doubts grow around Ederson’s long-term future at the Etihad.
Trafford, 22, left City in 2023 for £19 million but a £40 million buy-back clause was inserted into his contract. The Times reports that the two clubs are now in talks, with Trafford open to a return if an agreement can be reached.
City’s interest comes amid growing uncertainty over Ederson’s future. The Brazilian, who turns 32 next month, has only one year remaining on his contract and has been linked with a move to Galatasaray. While no official bid has been received yet, the Turkish club are expected to make a formal offer once they finalise a £65 million move for Victor Osimhen from Napoli.
Trafford enjoyed an outstanding season with Burnley in the Championship, keeping 29 clean sheets and conceding just 16 goals as Scott Parker’s side earned promotion. He also featured for England’s under-21 side that won the European Championship and has since been included in Thomas Tuchel’s senior England squad.
Newcastle had a £27 million bid for Trafford turned down in June, but City remain favourites to bring the keeper back as part of their summer reshuffle.
City also face a decision on Stefan Ortega, who is out of contract next year and has not committed his long-term future to the club. Marcus Bettinelli, 33, joined from Chelsea on a one-year deal and was part of the Club World Cup squad, but is not viewed as a long-term option.
Ederson, who has won six Premier League titles since joining in 2017, insisted last month he is committed to City.
