Barcelona have stepped back from their pursuit of Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, creating an opportunity for Arsenal to secure the 22-year-old Spaniard.
Williams, who scored the decisive goal in Spain’s Euro 2024 final victory over England, was a top target for Barcelona last summer window. However, the La Liga champions instead opted to sign RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo for €60m due to financial constraints.
Williams has continued his strong form this season, registering 11 goals and 7 assists in all competitions. His contract includes a £49 million release clause, making him an attainable target for Arsenal. The Gunners’ new sporting director, Andrea Berta, has reportedly already held preliminary talks to assess Williams’ interest in a move while Barcelona’s president Joan Laporta confirmed their shift in focus, stating: “Nico Williams was a candidate last season, but we chose Olmo. Now, other options are being considered.”
Barcelona’s decision to abandon their pursuit is partly due to the emergence of 17-year-old Lamine Yamal and the resurgence of Raphinha, who contributed 10 goals and 13 assists this season. With their wing positions secured, Arsenal now face reduced competition for Williams.
The Gunners, who secured Champions League qualification, have significant funds available, as highlighted by co-chairman Josh Kroenke: “We plan to invest to improve and compete at the highest level next season.”

Mikel Arteta has also hinted at major summer moves, stating: “We must find ways to elevate the squad, and if necessary, recruit players who can make the difference.” Williams’ €58m clause and £300,000-a-week wage demands may test Arsenal’s budget, but his age and productivity make him a viable target.
With Barcelona out of the race, the Gunners could finalize a deal swiftly, bolstering their attack ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Should Arsenal trigger Williams’ release clause? The Spaniard’s direct style and goal contributions could provide the extra firepower needed to challenge for the Premier League title. With Arteta and Berta aligned on transfer strategy, this could be one of the Gunners’ key summer signings.
