Amorim pushing for Sesko deal

Manchester United have opened discussions with RB Leipzig over a move for Benjamin Sesko as they intensify efforts to sign a new No 9 this summer, according to The Times.

The 22-year-old Slovenia international is high on United’s shortlist, and the club have made contact with Leipzig to gauge the conditions of a potential deal. No formal bid has been submitted yet, but a transfer would likely cost between €80 million and €90 million (£69m–£79m), including bonuses and add-ons. United are expected to face competition for Sesko, with Newcastle also showing strong interest.

United manager Ruben Amorim is pushing for more firepower up front, having already brought in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo for a combined £130m. Those two forwards scored 35 league goals between them last season, just nine fewer than United’s entire squad.

The club must now raise funds before making further additions, with Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Tyrell Malacia all available for transfer. Marcus Rashford has already departed on loan to Barcelona, with a purchase option included.

Sesko is a long-standing target for United’s director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, who worked with the forward during previous roles at Red Bull Salzburg and Leipzig. Sesko moved from Domzale to Salzburg in 2019 and joined Leipzig in 2022.

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins is another option being considered, but Villa maintain the England international is not for sale.

United are determined to solve their lack of goals this summer, and Sesko’s potential arrival would align with Amorim’s plans to build a younger, more dynamic forward line capable of competing at the top end of the Premier League.
