Al Hilal ready to pay big for Nunez

Al Hilal have made Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez their top transfer target and are preparing to intensify efforts to sign the Uruguay international, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

The Saudi Pro League club are looking to strengthen their attack after missing out on previous targets. They had pushed hard for Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, who has since joined Galatasaray, while moves for Alexander Isak and Benjamin Sesko have proved unworkable. With options narrowing, Al Hilal are now focused on landing Nunez and have begun internal preparations to move forward.

Although Liverpool have not yet received a formal bid, Al Hilal’s interest has been officially registered. The 25-year-old is seen as an ideal fit for new manager Simone Inzaghi’s system, and sources suggest Nunez is open to the idea of a move if discussions progress.

Nunez joined Liverpool from Benfica in 2022 in a deal worth up to €100 million (£85m) with add-ons. Last season, he scored seven goals in 47 appearances across all competitions but struggled for consistency and started just eight Premier League matches.

Milan have also shown interest, but their financial power is limited compared to Al Hilal’s. Al Nassr had previously pursued Nunez in January, and Al Hilal made contact with Liverpool again in June to understand the terms of a potential deal.

Liverpool recently signed Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt, adding further competition up front. The Athletic also reported Liverpool’s rejected £110m bid for Newcastle’s Alexander Isak on August 1.
