Nigeria midfielder Alex Iwobi scored and created another goal as Fulham came from behind to defeat Brentford 3-1 in the Premier League at the weekend.
The 29-year-old born in Lagos joined the Cottagers in 2023 from Everton. He began his Premier League career with Arsenal.
Victory lifted Fulham to eighth after five rounds, seven points behind leaders and defending champions Liverpool.
PREMIER LEAGUE
ALEX IWOBI (Fulham)
Iwobi led Fulham’s revival to beat west London rivals Brentford. The Nigerian international smashed home the home side’s equaliser for his first goal of the season and then added an assist for Harry Wilson to score Fulham’s second.
YANKUBA MINTEH (Brighton)
Minteh also struck for the first time this season in Brighton’s 2-2 draw against Tottenham. The Gambian winger showed his electric pace to get in behind the Spurs defence and coolly rounded Guglielmo Vicario before tapping into the empty net to give the Seagulls an early lead.
IDRISSA GUEYE, ILIMAN NDIAYE (Everton)
Gueye scored for just the ninth time in 216 Everton appearances but could not prevent the Toffees falling to a Merseyside derby defeat to Liverpool. The 35-year-old Senegal midfielder blasted home after a deft lay-off from compatriot Ndiaye. However, Everton were made to pay for a poor first-half performance as Liverpool ran out 2-1 winners at Anfield.
LA LIGA
KARL ETTA EYONG (Levante)
Cameroon striker Etta Eyong has started the season in excellent form and netted his third goal of the La Liga campaign with a fine header as Levante hammered Girona 4-0. The 21-year-old forward, who started the season at Villarreal before a transfer to nearby Levante, also set up a goal for strike partner Ivan Romero during a productive afternoon.
PAPE GUEYE (Villarreal)
Senegal midfielder Gueye showed great tenacity before scoring Villarreal’s late winner in a 2-1 victory over Osasuna with a deflected drive from distance. It was his second goal of the season, already half of his tally of four from the previous campaign as he establishes himself as a key player for the Yellow Submarine.
BUNDESLIGA
SAMUEL ESSENDE (Augsburg)
Essende’s late goal was one of the rare bright lights in Augsburg’s 4-1 Bundesliga thumping by Mainz. The Congolese, playing his first match this season after a four-match ban, came on at half-time. With seven minutes remaining, Essende blasted the ball through a crowded penalty box to make the scoreline more respectable.
BILAL EL KHANNOUSS (Stuttgart)
El Khannouss’ 50th-minute goal secured Stuttgart a valuable 2-0 win over St Pauli for just their second victory of the season. Ermedin Demirovic gave Stuttgart the lead and later created the second goal, laying on an inch-perfect pass for El Khannouss to score.
LIGUE 1
YOUSSEF EL ARABI (Nantes)
The 38-year-old former Moroccan international was the hero for Nantes in the derby against Rennes as he came on as a late substitute and scored a 96th-minute equaliser to earn his team a 2-2 draw. It was his first goal since signing for Nantes in the close season after spending last season in Cyprus. Indeed it was his first in Ligue 1 since May 2011 when playing for Caen.
DANNY NAMASO (Auxerre)
Namaso, 25, scored his first goal for Auxerre to secure a 1-0 win over Toulouse. It was his first goal since moving to Ligue 1 last month on loan from FC Porto. Namaso, who played for Porto at the recent Club World Cup, is a Cameroon international but was born in Reading, England and represented England at youth level up to Under-20.
