Sundowns’ road to the MTN8 final

Mamelodi Sundowns are looking to win the MTN8 title for the first time since 2021, facing a dominant Orlando Pirates side that has claimed the trophy every single year since.

The stage is set for a blockbuster MTN8 final as Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates lock horns once again. Sundowns return to the showpiece for the first time since 2023, when they narrowly lost out to Pirates on penalties.

For Miguel Cardoso, it presents an opportunity to capture his first domestic cup trophy since taking charge of Masandawana. Standing in his way, however, is a relentless Bucs side that has dominated the competition by winning the last four MTN8 titles.

Historically, Sundowns haven’t enjoyed an abundance of success in the Top Eight Cup, managing to lift the trophy just four times since 1988. In contrast, Orlando Pirates have claimed it 14 times, one fewer than Kaizer Chiefs’ record of 15.

Sundowns’ road to MTN8 final

Mamelodi Sundowns began their challenge for the MTN8 title with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Polokwane City in the quarterfinals. A late Cassius Mailula goal in extra-time sealed the victory for Cardoso’s side.

Next up was a grueling two-legged semifinal clash against Golden Arrows. Sundowns suffered a 1-0 defeat at home in the first-leg, but a crucial 3-2 victory away from home was enough to secure their spot in the final via the away-goals rule.

Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns are set to meet at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday, 10 October, for the 2026 MTN8 final.

Kick-off is scheduled for 18:00. Should the teams remain deadlocked after regulation time, extra time and, if necessary, penalties will decide the champion.
