Five of the greatest El Clasicos of all time

From Messi silencing the Bernabeu to Barcelona's historic 6-2 demolition, these are five El Clasico encounters that football will never forget.

Over 260 meetings across more than a century. These five stand apart.

Barcelona 6-2 Real Madrid – May 2009

Gonzalo Higuain gave Real Madrid an early lead. What followed was an embarrassment.

Henry and Messi each scored twice, with further goals from Puyol and Pique. Xavi did not score but assisted four goals in a masterclass of control.

The result sealed the La Liga title. Barcelona went on to win an historic sextuple that season under Pep Guardiola.

Messi was not on the scoresheet but was involved in almost everything. The result sent a brutal message about the gap between the two sides.

Ronaldinho then produced a jaw-dropping free kick that left Casillas frozen. It ended 4-3. Every legend on the pitch delivered.

Real Madrid 0-3 Barcelona – April 2017

Messi scored twice before producing one of the most iconic moments in El Clasico history.

His 92nd-minute winner was his 500th career goal – struck with the final kick of the match. He pulled off his shirt and held it up to the stunned Bernabeu crowd.

The result kept Barcelona firmly in the La Liga title race.

The first leg ended 2-2. The second was even better.

Iniesta put Barca ahead before Ronaldo equalised. Messi then glided past Ronaldo and chipped Casillas. Benzema levelled before Messi struck again in the 88th minute.

Barcelona won 5-4 on aggregate. They went on to beat Manchester United 3-1 at Wembley in the final.

The Messi and Ronaldo rivalry at its absolute peak.
