Mofokeng makes his mark in Europa League

Relebohile Mofokeng opened the scoring as Union Saint-Gilloise beat Viktoria Plzen 3-0 on a dramatic Europa League night.

Bafana Bafana star Relebohile Mofokeng continued his impressive start to life in Belgium by scoring in Union Saint-Gilloise’s 3-0 Europa League victory over Viktoria Plzen.

The 21-year-old broke the deadlock in the 17th minute, controlling Massire Sylla’s long pass before calmly finishing to give the Belgian side a perfect start in Czechia.

Mateo Biondic doubled Union’s advantage shortly before half-time, while Ondrej Kricfalusi completed the scoring in the 59th minute.

Elsewhere, Bournemouth marked their first European appearance with a memorable 2-1 victory away to Real Sociedad. Justin Kluivert scored the club’s first goal in European competition before Rayan doubled their lead, with Sergio Gomez pulling one back for the Spanish side.

Crystal Palace also enjoyed a dominant night, beating Lech Poznan 4-0 at Selhurst Park, while Juventus thrashed NEC Nijmegen 5-0 in Turin.

Celtic suffered the biggest upset of the evening as Ferencvaros claimed a 3-1 victory at Celtic Park. Besiktas recorded an impressive 4-1 win over Marseille, while Torreense edged Lillestrom 2-1.

Earlier, Red Bull Salzburg beat Levski Sofia 1-0 and OFI Crete secured a 2-0 victory over Hoffenheim.
