Bayer Leverkusen have reached an agreement in principle to appoint former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag as their new head coach.
Ten Hag has been out of work since leaving United in October 2024, with the club sitting 14th in the Premier League after nine games. He was replaced by Ruben Amorim after managing just four wins in 14 matches.
Despite a difficult end to his United tenure, Ten Hag’s time in England included notable highs. He won the Carabao Cup in 2022–23, ending a six-year trophy drought, and followed it up with FA Cup success the next season. He also guided United to a top-three league finish and two domestic cup finals in his first campaign.

Before United, Ten Hag spent four and a half years at Ajax, winning three Eredivisie titles and reaching the 2018–19 Champions League semi-finals, famously beating Real Madrid and Juventus. He also previously coached Bayern Munich’s second team from 2013 to 2015.
Leverkusen are looking to move forward after a mixed 2024–25 season. Under Xabi Alonso, they finished second in the Bundesliga, 13 points behind Bayern Munich, and missed out on silverware after winning the treble the year before.
Alonso will replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid, with the Italian set to take over Brazil’s national team.
