UCL Form Guide: Real Madrid vs Olympique Marseille

Real Madrid welcome Olympique Marseille in a highly anticipated UEFA Champions League clash, with both sides entering the contest on the back of contrasting domestic and continental form.

Real Madrid

Real Madrid have won their last five matches in La Liga and friendlies. Their recent results include a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad, 2-1 against Mallorca, 3-0 against Real Oviedo and 1-0 against Osasuna.

They have conceded two goals in their last four competitive matches. In July, they lost 4-0 to PSG in the Club World Cup but have since won four in a row, scoring at least twice in each match.

Olympique Marseille

Marseille have mixed results in Ligue 1 this season. They beat Lorient 4-0, but lost 1-0 to Lyon and 1-0 to Rennes away from home.
At home, they scored five goals against Paris FC and three against Aston Villa in friendlies. Both of their league defeats this season have come away from home.

Head-to-Head

Real Madrid and Marseille last met in the 2009 Champions League group stage. Real won 3-0 at home and 3-1 away. In total, they have played four times in the Champions League. Real Madrid won all four matches, scoring 12 goals and conceding four.

With home advantage, superior depth and form, Madrid go into this clash as clear favourites, though Marseille’s recent attacking flair suggests they will not arrive in the Spanish capital simply to defend.
