Pre-season brought wins over Olympiacos (2-1), Sorrento (4-0) and Girona (3-2), with a 2-1 defeat to Brest and a 1-1 draw with Casertana. Last season ended with draws against Parma (0-0) and Genoa (2-2), plus a 2-0 win over Torino.

The clubs last met in the 2017 Champions League group stage. City won both matches, 4-2 in Naples and 2-1 in Manchester. In 2011, Napoli won 2-1 at home after a 1-1 draw in England.
