SA’s Carnell named MLS coach of the Year

Former Bafana Bafana defender Bradley Carnell has been crowned the 2025 Sigi Schmid MLS Coach of the Year after guiding Philadelphia Union to the top of the league standings in a record-breaking campaign.

South African coach and former national team defender Bradley Carnell has been named the 2025 Sigi Schmid MLS Coach of the Year after a standout season as Philadelphia Union coach.

Carnell led Philly to their best ever campaign in his first season at the helm, finishing first in the Major League Soccer regular season standings and securing the MLS’ Supporters’ Shield for the first time in the club’s history.

Philadelphia topped the Eastern Conference by a single point ahead of Cincinnati after securing 20 wins, six draws and eight losses, the most victories the club has achieved ina single MLS season.

A former left-back who represented South Africa at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Carnell spent much of his playing career in the German Bundesliga before transitioning into coaching. Prior to his MLS success, he served as an assistant coach at Orlando Pirates in the South African top flight.
