Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has bemoaned the attitudes that other South African clubs have shown towards the Caf Champions League.
Sundowns are the only South African team who will be competing in this season’s continental showpiece after Bidvest Wits were knocked out in the qualifying round on penalties by Clube Desportivo de Agosto on Saturday. The Brazilians, however, eased into the group stages after overcoming Rayon Sports 2-0 on Sunday evening.
The former Bafana Bafana coach believes that South African clubs have a duty to the national side to qualify for these tournaments: ‘If we don’t qualify as a club then how do you do it as a nation? We have to stop complaining about travelling and all that,’ Mosimane said.
The former Caf Coach of the Year also highlighted that the competition will always be a high priority at Sundowns, ‘It’s the vision of the club to go to the Champions League and it’s important that we go to the group stages irrespective of what is happening locally. We have to, that’s the level of a big team.’
Sundowns will be waiting in anticipation to see who they will come up against in the group stages, with the draw taking place on Wednesday at the Caf Headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.
