On this day: Beckham bends England through

On this day in 2001, David Beckham produced one of England’s most iconic moments, scoring a stunning stoppage-time free-kick against Greece to send the Three Lions to the 2002 World Cup.

Greece twice took the lead at Old Trafford, leaving England 2-1 down and facing a World Cup playoff as the match entered stoppage time.

With virtually the last kick of the game, captain Beckham curled a superb free-kick into the top corner to rescue a 2-2 draw.

The point secured top spot in their qualifying group and sent Sven-Goran Eriksson’s side directly to the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan.
